Do you get anxious about social situations or meeting new people, worrying about what to say or do? Is it difficult for you to understand and express yourself, how you feel or what you want/need? Do you often feel misunderstood? Maybe your confidence could do with a boost. Maybe you'd like some support to improve your relationships. I know what this feels like and love working with clients to help them build up their confidence and improve their relationships with the people important to them.
About me and my practice
When working as a youth worker and seeing the challenges many young people were facing, I felt driven to train as a counsellor in order to work more personally with teenagers on the things they were struggling with. Through my training and experience with adults, as well as my own therapy, I realised how many of us carry our challenges from childhood through into adulthood if they are not dealt with earlier.
While there are often overlaps, everyone has a unique story to bring to counselling. I see it as a privilege to be a part of your story, to help you with what is troubling you, empowering you to do things differently. I seek to understand your unique point of view and work with you to make positive changes in your life. I have seen many clients develop in their self-understanding and confidence, meaning they can make better decisions and build stronger relationships with friends, family, peers, and colleagues.
I work on an integrative basis, meaning I use elements of different counselling models. This helps me to offer you a service tailored to your personality, difficulties, hopes and needs.
Experience
Since 2008, I have supported clients in charity and non-charity counselling services and in my own private practice. I enjoy working with teenagers, adults and couples with a wide variety of difficulties.
Some of the difficulties that have prompted my clients to seek counselling include relationship problems, low confidence, low self-esteem, feeling misunderstood, uncertainty about the future, regret and shame over decisions they have made, struggling with difficult emotions, processing past traumas or losses, anxiety, and unhelpful thoughts.
I work with clients with a Christian faith, other faith or no particular faith. It would be your choice whether you wanted to explore spiritual elements that may relate to your counselling. Many people of faith appreciate having a counsellor who understands the importance of their faith in their lives. For some this is a shared Christian faith, for some it is another faith. For others it is beneficial to be able to speak openly about issues related to wider spirituality in a welcoming environment.
Clients have often told me how much they have valued the non-judgmental space I have provided for them in sessions, to be able to speak freely on the things that have been troubling them and to be able to work through these things to find new, hopeful ways forward.
My hope, always, is to do myself out of a job! I want to support you to make positive changes, both inside and out, so you can take that learning onwards with you as you increase your sense of fulfillment in life.
Qualifications
I have an Advanced Diploma in Christian Counselling, a Level 5 Certificate in Counselling Young People and a Certificate in Online and Telephone Counselling.
I attend regular additional training on a range of topics to help me stay up to date and keep developing my knowledge and skills, so I can offer you the best possible support in counselling.
I have training on working with couples, toxic relationships, creative counselling, attachment, disordered eating, self-injury and anxiety, as well as many other subjects. I also have training on working with spiritual elements, be this related to Christianity, other faiths or wider spirituality, as is relevant for you.
